About Sound ‘n Scores Presentation
Throughout 2025–2026, we delivered this engaging educational music history presentation at five Palm Beach County Library (PBCL) locations, bringing the fascinating story of recorded sound and archival preservation to audiences across Palm Beach County.
The presentation takes audiences through the history and evolution of sound recording, highlighting the development of recording technology and how it transformed the way we capture and preserve music, voices, and significant historical moments. We also share the story of the Recorded Sound Archives, showcasing its collections, exploring its mission, and demonstrating how archives protect and preserve our musical and cultural heritage.
A highlight of the presentation is the opportunity to showcase unique, unusual, and fascinating items from the archive. These recordings and artifacts bring different eras of music and history to life, demonstrating how sound recordings serve as valuable historical resources and preserve stories that might otherwise be forgotten.
To provide a behind-the-scenes perspective, the presentation incorporates video tours showcasing vintage recording equipment and the technology used throughout the history of sound recording and was adapted to accommodate a younger STEM audience as well. When time allows, we also include a video demonstration of the audio digitization process, showing audiences how we transfer historical recordings into digital formats to preserve them and make them accessible for future generations.
By combining music history, archival storytelling, historical artifacts, and demonstrations of preservation techniques, Time Traveling Through Music provides an engaging educational experience that connects audiences with the past while highlighting the ongoing importance of preserving recorded sound for future generations.
